The grooves on your tires are specifically designed to disperse the water so that you have traction even when the road is wet. If your tires are worn out or bald, or if there is low tire pressure, you are more likely to hydroplane. Your best bet is to make sure your tires are safe. This means do not use your tires until they are completely bald and keep your tire pressure at the recommended psi. It rains everywhere and you should be able to count on your tires when you need them the most.
Under-inflation of tires is a serious safety concern because it forces excessive flexing on the sidewalls. This additional strain on the tire can build up more internal heat, resulting in the aforementioned hazards and premature tire failure. Research completed by the U.S. National Traffic and Safety Administration shows that one in three cars or light trucks are being driven with at least one significantly under-inflated tire. These improperly inflated tires wear out more quickly because they put more drag on the road (rolling resistance). This also leads to a reduction in fuel economy, something most individuals and fleet owners definitely want to avoid.
All-season tires are designed to function in varied but general weather conditions: dry roads and rain and in warmer temperatures. They are not engineered for specific weather conditions. If tires were vehicles, an all season would be a family sedan while a winter tire would be a Hummer. You can get through a blizzard with massive snow in a sedan possibly but it would be a lot safer to do it in a Hummer. It’s the same way with tires. You may make it through on all season tires but you will have much better results and you will be much safer with a good snow tire.
